Definition
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so it can be extracted directly as an answer — in a featured snippet, a voice assistant response, or a structured answer box — rather than just ranking as a standard blue link.
How it works
Answer engines (Google’s featured snippets, voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, and “People Also Ask” boxes) scan indexed pages for content that directly and concisely answers a specific question. Content optimized for AEO typically states the question clearly (often as a heading), answers it in the first 1-2 sentences, and then expands with supporting detail — combined with structured data (like FAQ or HowTo schema) that makes the question-answer relationship explicit to machines.
Why it matters
A growing share of searches are answered directly on the results page or read aloud by a voice assistant, without a click ever happening. Ranking #1 in classic search no longer guarantees visibility if a competitor's content is the one selected as the direct answer — AEO is what determines who wins that spot.
Examples
- A "How does X work?" heading followed immediately by a 2-sentence direct answer, then supporting detail
- FAQ schema markup on a service page that surfaces the questions directly in Google's search results
- Content answering a specific voice-search-style question ("What is the cost of…") in a single clear sentence
