Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can lift it as a direct answer: a featured snippet, a “People also ask” result, a voice reply or a sentence inside an AI-generated overview. It works by asking the questions customers actually type or say, answering each one in the first sentence or two, and backing the answer with clear, accurate detail. AEO builds on SEO, because a page must be crawlable, indexed and trusted before any engine will quote it.
What an answer engine is
An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than only a list of links. Google does this with featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes and AI Overviews. Voice assistants read a single answer aloud. Chat-based tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity compose answers and often cite the pages they drew from.
In every case the engine has to find a passage that answers the question cleanly. AEO is the work of making your page the easiest and most trustworthy place to find that passage.
Where AEO answers appear
- Featured snippets: a short extract shown above or beside the regular results, usually a paragraph, list or table taken from one page.
- People also ask: expandable related questions, each answered with an extract from a web page.
- AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google’s AI-generated summaries, which link to supporting pages.
- Voice results: spoken answers from assistants, which favour short, plain-language responses.
- AI chat assistants: answers that may cite or link to sources. Visibility here overlaps with generative engine optimization (GEO).
How to write content that answer engines can quote
- Start from real questions. Collect them from sales calls, support emails, “People also ask” boxes, Search Console queries and community forums.
- Use the question as a heading. A heading such as “How long does a website redesign take?” tells engines exactly what the section answers.
- Answer in the first sentence. Give a complete, direct answer in about 40 to 60 words, then add detail, exceptions and examples underneath.
- Make each answer stand alone. Repeat the subject instead of writing “it” or “this”, so the passage still makes sense when quoted out of context.
- Match the format to the question. Definitions suit a short paragraph, processes suit numbered steps, and comparisons suit a short list.
- Keep facts precise and current. Prices, timelines, specifications and dates should be accurate and updated when they change.
What structured data does, and what it no longer does
Structured data (schema markup) labels the content of a page in a standard vocabulary, so machines can tell a product price from a review score or an opening time. It remains useful: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article and Breadcrumb markup help search engines understand who you are and what a page contains.
Some schema types no longer produce visible results in Google. HowTo rich results were retired in September 2023. FAQ rich results were first limited to authoritative government and health sites in 2023, and Google stopped showing them for all sites in May 2026. FAQPage markup does no harm and can stay, but adding it will not create an expandable FAQ listing in Google results. A well-written question-and-answer section on the page still helps readers, featured snippets and AI answers, because those draw on the visible text.
How AEO differs from SEO and GEO
- SEO earns rankings and clicks across the full results page. It covers technical health, content and authority. Read more on our SEO service page.
- AEO focuses on the passage level, so a specific answer gets extracted and shown.
- GEO focuses on how AI assistants describe and recommend a brand across many sources, not only your own pages.
The three overlap heavily. Our SEO vs AEO vs GEO comparison explains when each one deserves the most effort.
How to measure AEO
Answer visibility is harder to track than rankings, because some answers produce no click. A practical AEO report combines:
- Snippet ownership: which target questions show your page as the featured snippet or in “People also ask”.
- Search Console data: impressions and clicks for question-style queries, watched over time.
- AI answer checks: a fixed list of questions run regularly in AI Overviews and chat assistants, noting whether your pages are cited.
- Enquiry quality: whether leads arrive better informed, which often follows when your answers are seen first.
Which businesses benefit most from AEO
AEO pays off when customers research before they buy and ask similar questions again and again. Clinics, law and accounting firms, education providers, software companies, home services and ecommerce stores with technical products all fit this pattern. If your team answers the same questions on calls every week, those questions are your AEO roadmap. You can see what an AEO engagement costs on our pricing page.
