How to compare marketing channels fairly before deciding where to invest

To compare marketing channels fairly, judge each one on the same criteria: how quickly it produces results, how it is paid for, how long results last, how much intent the audience has, how well it can be measured and how far it can scale. Then compare channels on cost per qualified lead or customer, not on clicks or impressions. Most businesses do not need to choose one channel over another; the useful question is which mix and sequence fits their goal, budget and timeline.

Seven criteria for comparing marketing channels

  1. Speed: how soon the channel can produce visits and enquiries after launch.
  2. Cost model: whether you pay per click, per impression, per lead, as a fixed fee or mainly in time and content.
  3. Durability: whether results continue when spending or effort pauses.
  4. Intent: whether people are actively searching for a solution or being interrupted while doing something else.
  5. Control: how precisely you can choose audience, message, budget and timing.
  6. Measurability: how clearly results can be tracked to enquiries and revenue.
  7. Scalability: whether results grow in proportion to more budget or effort, and where they level off.

The most common marketing channel comparisons

SEO vs PPC

SEO builds unpaid visibility in search results over months, while PPC buys immediate placement and stops when spending stops. Read the full SEO vs PPC comparison.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO

SEO targets rankings, AEO shapes content to be the direct answer, and GEO improves how AI assistants describe and cite a brand. They overlap heavily and work best together. Read SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

Organic vs paid marketing

Organic marketing earns attention through content, search, social and PR; paid marketing buys it through ads. Most growth plans combine them. Read organic vs paid marketing.

Compare on cost per customer, not cost per click

A cheap click is not a cheap customer. Two channels can look very different on the surface yet produce similar results once quality is counted. Track each channel through the full journey:

  • Visits and cost per visit.
  • Enquiries and cost per enquiry.
  • Qualified leads and cost per qualified lead.
  • Customers won and cost per customer.
  • Revenue and profit per customer over time.

For organic channels, include the cost of content, tools and people, even though there is no media spend.

How to run a fair channel test

  1. Define one goal and one primary metric before starting.
  2. Give each channel enough budget and time to produce meaningful data; organic channels need months, while paid tests can show early signals within weeks.
  3. Send each channel to an equally good landing page so the page does not decide the result.
  4. Use consistent tracking, such as UTM tags, call tracking and CRM source fields.
  5. Change one major variable at a time.
  6. Review results against the full funnel, not just the first conversion.

Attribution pitfalls when comparing channels

  • Last-click bias: the final click often gets full credit, even though search, social, PR or a referral introduced the buyer earlier.
  • Brand search confusion: people who search your name after seeing an ad or article may be counted as “organic”.
  • Offline conversions: phone calls, WhatsApp chats and walk-ins are easy to miss without tracking.
  • Short time windows: long buying cycles make channels look weaker than they are if you judge too early.

Asking new customers “How did you hear about us?” is a simple, useful check on what analytics tools report.

Choosing a channel mix by goal

  • Enquiries soon: start with paid search and focused lead generation, then build organic channels alongside.
  • Lower acquisition cost over time: invest steadily in SEO, content and AI visibility.
  • Awareness for a new brand or category: combine social media, video, PR and paid social.
  • Trust in a high-value purchase: prioritise reviews, expert content, PR and founder visibility.

Revisit the mix every few months as data builds and as organic channels begin to carry more of the load.

When to pause or drop a marketing channel

  • It has had a fair test period with good tracking and still produces no qualified leads.
  • Its cost per customer stays well above what a customer is worth to the business.
  • Leads from it rarely convert, even after the landing page and follow-up process have been improved.
  • The audience it reaches no longer matches the customers you want.

Before dropping a channel, check whether it helps other channels indirectly, for example by building the brand searches that later convert.
