In-depth guide

How to diagnose common digital marketing problems before choosing solutions

Most digital marketing problems fall into a few patterns: people cannot find you, they find you but do not visit, they visit but do not enquire, or they enquire but do not buy. Identifying which stage is failing comes before choosing solutions, because each stage has different causes. A short diagnosis using free tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics and your Google Business Profile usually shows where the problem sits and whether it needs a quick fix, a content change or a bigger rebuild.

The four stages where marketing problems appear

  1. Visibility: your pages do not appear in Google, Maps or AI-generated answers for the searches that matter.
  2. Clicks: you appear, but people choose other results because your titles, descriptions, reviews or brand are less convincing.
  3. Conversion: visitors arrive but leave without calling, filling a form or buying.
  4. Follow-up and sales: enquiries come in but are slow to be answered, poorly qualified or lost before closing.

Fixing a later stage is often cheaper than buying more traffic. Doubling enquiries from the same visitors has the same effect as doubling visitors.

Common marketing problems, their usual causes and solutions

The website is not ranking on Google

Typical causes are pages that are not indexed, content that does not match what people search for, technical issues such as slow or broken pages, and too few trustworthy links or mentions. See why a website is not ranking.

ChatGPT and other AI assistants never mention the business

AI tools rely on clear, consistent facts and independent sources. Thin About pages, inconsistent business details and little third-party coverage make a business hard to cite. See why ChatGPT does not mention you and how to improve AI visibility.

Organic traffic has stopped growing

Flat traffic often comes from content that covers too few topics, outdated pages, competitors publishing deeper answers or changes in how search results are displayed. See how to increase organic traffic.

Traffic arrives but few people enquire

Look at page speed on mobile, clarity of the offer, trust signals such as reviews and examples, and how many steps the form or booking takes.

Enquiries arrive but few become customers

Common causes are slow responses, leads from the wrong audience, unclear pricing and no structured follow-up.

The founder or brand is not well known

Visibility for people builds through consistent profiles, a clear point of view, regular publishing and media appearances. See how to build a founder brand.

A simple self-diagnosis checklist

  • Google Search Console: check that key pages are indexed, which searches show your site and which pages lost impressions or clicks.
  • Google Analytics: compare traffic sources, landing pages and conversion events over the last few months.
  • Google Business Profile: confirm categories, hours, photos and reviews are complete and current.
  • Search your own brand: review what appears on the first page, in Maps and in AI assistants when asked about your business.
  • Test your own website: open it on a phone, try to find a price or service detail and submit an enquiry.
  • Check lead handling: measure how long it takes your team to reply to a new enquiry.

Symptoms and root causes are different things

A drop in leads is a symptom. The root cause may be a technical change on the website, a broken form, a pause in ad spending, a seasonal dip, a competitor’s new offer or a change in how search results look. Before changing strategy, confirm what changed and when, then compare it against site updates, campaign changes and search engine announcements. Changing many things at once makes it impossible to know what actually worked.

When to fix and when to rebuild

  • Fix: most ranking, conversion and tracking problems can be solved by improving existing pages, structure, speed and content.
  • Restructure: when services, locations or audiences have changed significantly, the site architecture and messaging may need reorganising.
  • Rebuild: consider a new website only when the platform cannot be made fast, secure or editable, or when the brand has fundamentally changed.

If a rebuild is necessary, plan redirects and keep existing high-performing pages so search visibility is not lost.

Matching problems to services

  • Visibility in Google: SEO and technical fixes.
  • Visibility in AI answers: GEO, AEO and PR.
  • Fast enquiries while organic results build: PPC management and lead generation.
  • Low conversion: web development, landing pages and clearer messaging.
  • Trust and awareness: branding, PR and reputation management.
