AEO starter checklist: how to write answers that answer engines can quote

To start with AEO (answer engine optimization), collect the real questions your customers ask, give each important question a clear heading, answer it directly in the first one or two sentences, then add supporting detail in short paragraphs, lists or steps. Answer engines, including featured snippets, “People also ask”, voice assistants and AI search features, prefer content that states the answer plainly, matches the question’s wording and comes from a trustworthy page. This checklist shows how to apply that to your existing pages.

Step 1: Collect the questions people ask

  • Sales calls, WhatsApp chats, support emails and customer reviews.
  • Google autocomplete suggestions and “People also ask” boxes for your main topics.
  • Queries in Google Search Console that are phrased as questions, often starting with how, what, why, which, can or cost.
  • Questions customers ask AI assistants, which you can test yourself.
  • Forums, communities and Q&A sites where your audience discusses problems.

Group similar questions together and decide which page should answer each group, so you do not create several thin pages competing for the same question.

Step 2: Match the answer format to the question

  • “What is” questions: a one or two sentence definition, followed by context.
  • “How to” questions: a numbered list of steps in order.
  • “Best” or “types of” questions: a bulleted list with a short explanation for each item.
  • “Cost” questions: the factors that affect price, with honest ranges only where you can support them.
  • “Difference between” questions: a short summary sentence, then the key differences listed side by side.
  • Yes or no questions: answer yes, no or “it depends” first, then explain why.

Step 3: Write answer engine friendly sections

  1. Use the question, or a close version of it, as the heading.
  2. Put the direct answer in the first sentence below the heading, ideally in around 40 to 60 words.
  3. Make the answer make sense on its own, without needing the rest of the page.
  4. Name the subject instead of relying on “it” or “this”, so the excerpt is clear out of context.
  5. Follow with detail, examples and exceptions for readers who want more.

Write naturally for people first. Answer engines quote content that is genuinely clear, not content stuffed with question phrases.

Step 4: Strengthen the page around the answer

  • Make sure the page is indexed, fast and mobile-friendly, because answers are only drawn from pages search engines can access.
  • Show who wrote or reviewed the content and why they are qualified.
  • Keep facts, prices and dates current, and update the page when they change.
  • Link to related questions on your site so readers and search engines can explore the topic.
  • Use structured data that accurately matches the visible content, such as Organization, Article, Product or LocalBusiness markup where relevant.

Note that Google has retired some rich result types, including HowTo results in 2023 and FAQ rich results in 2026, so markup alone will not create special displays. Clear visible answers matter more.

Step 5: Prepare for voice and AI answers

  • Use conversational phrasing that mirrors how people speak questions aloud.
  • Keep key local facts, such as address, hours and service areas, accurate on your website and Google Business Profile, since voice searches are often local.
  • Write concise summaries at the top of long guides, which AI systems can draw on.
  • Make sure AI search crawlers are not blocked, so your answers can be used as sources.

Common AEO mistakes

  • Hiding the answer below long introductions or sales copy.
  • Vague headings such as “Overview” that do not reflect any question.
  • Answers that contradict other pages on the same site.
  • Copying competitors’ snippets instead of giving a better, more accurate answer.
  • Adding question-and-answer sections that do not match what visitors actually ask.

How to track AEO progress

  • Search your target questions and note whether your page appears in snippets or “People also ask”.
  • Watch impressions and click-through for question queries in Search Console.
  • Test the same questions in AI assistants monthly and record whether your site is cited.
