Definition
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving a website so that search engines like Google can crawl, understand and rank it for relevant searches — without paying for placement.
How it works
Search engines send automated crawlers to discover pages, index the content they find, and then rank indexed pages against a search query using hundreds of signals — including relevance, content quality, site structure, page speed, and how many other trusted sites link to a page. SEO work generally falls into three areas: technical SEO (making sure the site can be crawled and indexed correctly), on-page SEO (structuring content and keywords so it matches real search intent), and off-page SEO (earning backlinks and mentions that signal trust and authority).
Why it matters
Organic search is still one of the highest-intent traffic sources available — someone searching for a service is actively looking for it, not being interrupted by an ad. Unlike paid traffic, SEO rankings continue delivering visibility after the initial work is done, which is what makes it compound over time rather than stopping the moment spend stops.
Examples
- A local business ranking for "[service] in [city]" instead of relying only on referrals
- A blog post ranking for a specific question and driving consistent monthly traffic without ongoing ad spend
- An ecommerce product page ranking above competitors for its exact product category
